As others have said, it is quite likely that utility companies are obligated (by law) to tell you what the last year's average utility bill is (at least that seems to be the practice here in minnesota).
If you do rent the place, remember that the heat loss from your house is proportional the the temperature difference between inside and outside walls. Thus, if you keep the house colder (especially when you're not there) you will use less gas and conserve energy. Programmable thermostats are very nice for this (especially with a forced-air gas furnace). I regularly have my thermostat drop to ~50F when I'm not there and rise back up to 64 F or so when I am home - this is very easy to program in and signifigantly reduces energy bill.
more anecdoatl data. I used to live in Minneapolise in a 1910 2 story (~1800 sq ft). My gas bill topped out at $230 in the middle fo the winter.
