look for the fancy stuff in a tube that you apply with a brush (like in the old movies) from trafalgar, crabtree & evelyn, trueffit & Hill. Get a good brush (only about $25-50 is all you need to spend, don't get a cheap one, it'll last for years and is worth the investment).
Try to avoid the extra fancy creams like they sell at Nordstrom etc., they're just selling packaging I've had some bad experience with Jack Black and others and they're way too expensive. Stick to the names above or similar. The point is to get a cream with glycerin, that's right, glycerin, which makes it smooth and softens the beard well. THe brush, appropriately whipped up, gives a great foam and coverage with the fancy creams. That's the secret ingredient.
No opinion on razors.
