Now what if the company you work for simply DO NOT make the product you're interested in? Let's take basic cars, those the seem to fit the fatory worker's budget.
- subcompacts: lots of choices from Asian car makers and GM, nothing from Ford;
- two-door coupes: Civic, Cobalt, Scion, nothing from Ford;
and the list goes on.
Also, do not forget that car purchase is not strictly a transaction to "fit one's needs", like anthony said. It's highly emotional and subjective, and practical reasons often have little to do with it. What if you don't like the styling of Ford products? What if you don't like salespeople in the dealership? Those are the issues factory workers have ZERO influence on, and forcing them against their will does not make any sense.
Finally, I perfectly accept the situation where employees do not care about the finished product and its marketplace. Seriously. Imagine I'm a conveyor operator. I take pride in having my fasteners tightened quickly, and precisely to the spec. But I don't care where those bolts are on a space shuttle or a minivan. I'm very good at it, I'm the best in the world, the perfect guy for the job. Can I still drive a car I like?
