For fairly short money, a 9000 is a great car and a huge value. I have 2, one is my daughter's daily driver that I hope will get her at least through college.
But it can take a lot of hunting to find a good one, and you have to deal with the usual 9K issues to ensure it stays in good form. Plus, since the newest ones are 8 years old, the car may have some significant miles on it. That's not necessarily a bad thing. With Saabs, I look at condition and history more than mileage.
Mike Lynch is right about the reliability of the 9-5, but it's the newer ones that are the most reliable (2002 and later), so the initial outlay for a 9-5 will be a lot more than for a 9K, but a 9-5 will likely have fewer miles. That doesn't mean it won't have a "gotcha" wating 8 months from now, but if you can spring for a 9-5 with a CPO or other good warranty then that'd be the best way to go.
Safety-wise both are fine, although the 9-5 probably has an edge.
Is the hatchback of a 9000 important for her? Grad/college students usually have to move a couple times a year, so it may be useful to have the ability to put her life in the back and go to where ever her grad studies take her.
