Aren't calories burned more a factor of distance than speed? Something in the corner of my brain thinks that. That would seem to be the main question. If you're after caloric burn (weight loss), then distance would be the main issue. So, if I'm remembering correctly, one hour at 5 mph would burn more calories than .5 hours at 8 mph.
If it's speed you're after, then work in some interval training a couple of times a week. If it's endurance you're after, then gradually increase time, distance, and speed (but no more than 10% increase a week).
And keep doing the weights, but remember that weight training can actually add pounds because muscle weighs more than fat. Your physique may change even though the scale doesn't.
