Fitness Question - how fast should I be running?

I have put on weight since the Boston Marathon last year (whoops) and now am back at the gym and watching my diet since about the new year. Anyways, I have always pushed myself very, very hard at the gym- running 5+ miles at 7.5 - 8.5 mph on the treadmill, usually little incline. Anyway, by the time I make it off the machine, my face is bright read, I am heaving for breath, and I can barely walk. (Maybe I am slightly exagerating) but I do push myself quite hard.
I see people who look liek they are in better shape than me and they are really putzing around on the aerobics, jogging for 4 or 5 miles but only doing like 5.5 mph or so. There is a little chart on the treadmill that shows optimal heart rate for weight loss and for aerobic workout, I think i am falling towards the upper part (Aerobic workout). Do you really burn fat faster running slightly slower?
BTW, I do lift moderate weights as well because I am aware that muscle increases your metabolism and helps you lose weight too. I just wonder if maybe my workouts would be more effective if I slowed it down a bit when running (either on the treadmill or outdoors).
