We're born with all the fast twitch and slow twitch muscles we'll ever have. You can increase the strength and stamina that they can work with but thats it. Thats why distance runners are only good at distance. They have predominatley slow twitch muscles. It really becomes apparent though in swimming. I swam all through highschool and yes we all swam the same distance but when it came down to the events. A distace swimmer will always swim a better time than a sprint swimmer. We've both got the stamina but our muscles work in different ways. Then you go the other way. I can sprint my heart out but when it comes down to it since i was distance, i'm not gonna beat the sprinters. just my 2 cents and a basics sports medicine class.
