Why do people let diesels idle?

Since a large John Deere front loader has been idling away rather loudly right in front of my office window for the last few hours, I thought I would ask a question that has always bugged me. Why do people let their diesel engine idle for so long instead of shutting them off?
The only link I could find is from the EPA, which makes a good point that truck drivers do it to keep the AC or heat going, but otherwise it implies that it's just a waste for any remotely modern diesel to idle for more than 5 minutes. In addition to being wasteful and polluting, it must be terrible for the engine.
Any thoughts on what the conventional wisdom is?
