Because diesels have so much heat to deal with they have very effective cooling systems. Unfortunately this means they have a lot of water and oil to get up to operating temperature-not to mention trans fluid and hydraulics. I occassionally drive a front loader and when it's been sitting all night in below freezing weather it has to run a good 45 minutes to an hour for everything to get up to speed. When it's hot out, the harder you work them the hotter they get. Unlike a car they actually cool down when they sit and idle so you usually let them idle for a while before shutting them off. Truckers do it to keep the cab (their "home" either warm or cool. Diesels used to be very hard to get started when they were cold and required a whole regiment that included spraying either into the engine, so drivers didn't shut them off much on trips for fear of getting stranded.
