I was a dealer specializing in cars under $5k. I terms of best bang for the buck the GEO Prism wins hands down. It's mechanically indentical to the Toyota Corolla (and build on the same assembly line), but you can buy them significantly cheaper because they don't wear the Toyota name. Other good ones are the Subaru Impressa or the basic Legacy L, which is surprisingly cheap compared to Outbacks even though they are the same car. The Ford Escort is essentially a Mazda and not too bad, but I wouldn't recommend any other small domestics. Smaller Mazdas and Nissans are pretty good, but not as good as the Geo Prism. I don't recommend any other Geos.
