I second the vote for Saturn. I bought a Saturn SL2 1993 5 speed with 78k on it and put 100k more while only changing oil, tires, and battery. Did a serpentine belt replacement, that was the ONLY, repeat ONLY additional service. Not even the brakes or clutch were ever worked on! I was pretty shocked (especially the brakes, how in the world do they last that long?)but that car really worked for me all the time. Then it was totaled and I still drove it for 4 months. I dont know if this can go for all Saturns but that was the most dependable car I've owned. Had ABS, driver's airbag, auotmatic seatbelt, 30+ mpg. But the body panels shatter (they're plastic/resin/poly something) in accidents so bodywork is expensive.
