Someday I'll take the time to sit down and write about some of the amazing privacy defeating technologies & practices (social engineering). Anybody, not just your government, has access to so much of what you might think is your private information or your privacy these days.
One quick story - I remember about 15 years ago I had asked for a scanner for a gift. I used the Internet to look up info about my scanner and found I could disassemble it and cut one wire which would unlock the cellular frequencies (neighbors coordless phones were already easy to pick up). I think this was something like the 800MgH frequencies or I might be remembering that totally wrong. But anyway, I listened to a bunch of dumb cell phone calls and then I listened to this one:
P1. Hello.
P2. He, Jon. This is Seth. I just wanted to check in to see where we are inthe progress on the prototype and will it be ready to show on Thursday?
P1. Are you calling me from a cell phone?!
P2. Yeah, I'm on my cell.
P1. Hang up and call me from a landline.
Just goes to show. P1 probably thought P2 was being a paranoid freak yet P2 was absolutely 100% right. Someone was listening.
