Does brand of gas make a difference? And why?

I usually think it doesn't make much difference, but a couple recent trips make me wonder. Got a load of mid-grade gas Monday at an Irving station in NH, headed west to Rochester NY. Got a whopping 25 mpg overall (1/2 rural two lane, driven quickly, 1/2 NY Thruway at about 75). Air temp ranged from 15 to 32, no wind to speak of.
Got a tank of Hess mid-grade for the ride back yesterday. Got about 28.5 overall, same speeds, even some lake effect snow on the return ride. In fact, I probably pushed it harder on the way home--less traffic.
Second time this has happened. Car is my '96 9000 CSE 5-spd. Maybe it's just winter gas variations, but what to others find?
