the dealerships in the U.S don't have the capacity to repair all the cars they sell. With 11 to 12.5 million cars sold each year, and the average age of cars on the road something like 7 years, plus many older (and more maintenance-intensive) cars out there as well, the dealers cannot handle them all. Never could, never will.
So it is actually in manufacturers' best interest to share the information with independent shops because it helps spread the work required on all these cars around. While having to buy computers, diagnostic equipment, special tools and paying for some specialized info is a burden on indies, most of the cost can be passed along to customers over time, just as a dealer does.
Automakers' arguement that sharing the info, tools, etc., hurts their business is baloney. Not all customers go to dealers anyway, and some will *only* go to a dealer. Long term, the dealers do fine and all the cars on the road will get serviced better if they share the info.
Something I think we will ultimately see is automakers doing some type of partnering with independents who could act as authorized service centers--just service, no sales. Honda is already active in some voc-tech schools, training kids who want to be auto techs, and they come out with basic Honda certification. Extend that concept to service-only facilities, some independently operated (franchises, maybe?) and you have a different game.
