There is a constant spray of dirty water from every vehicle in front of you. That will get you to appreciate the wipers as opposed having to stop and get out every so often, in the dark and slop, to wipe the bulbs off by hand. Many people do not know this, but is actually useful to see at night -- even in the winter. The trick, I guess, is not to impact the mechanism by bumping into them while parking, etc. They are incredibly expensive to replace, especially at the dealer.
Useless? No way! That is, unless one plans never to drive his car where it snows.
The mechanical wipers wipe on a glass surface for normal halogen headlights, and the glass is hard enough not to be scratched by road grit under the wiper blade. However, Xenon HID bulbs make too much heat for a glass headlight and also deal with rain water without cracking. So a softer plastic material is used that can withstand the heat and the elements. However, blades and grit would scratch the surface making a blade system unworkable. So, one only gets squirts with HID. Less clean, but no scratches in the plastic.
