I had to ask this question as I dealt with two cars over a 48 hour period.
1. My new '06 Aero convertible which wouldn't let me put my passenger side window up as the pinch protection was reversing it, even though there was NOTHING in the way. Pouring rain in LA, and talk about technology/safety doing the opposite of what it should. One time the top wouldn't go down because it said there was something blocking it in the trunk....the trunk was EMPTY. Don't get me wrong...I LOVE the car, and will get them corrected and sure it will be fine. BUT, I realize the electronics are reaching a point where I wonder whether the impending issues outweigh the benefit. I feel sorry for BMW 7 series owners!
2. I just got to Boston and pulled my beloved '89 Peugeot 405 Mi16 out of its garage....20 degrees, been sitting in the garage for 40 days....car starts up instantly, and everything works, after 10 minutes of warm up, the tranny/clutch feel normal, an dit's like it was driven every day. This car was pre-ABS 4 wheel disc brakes, pre-airbags, no crazy electrical gizmo's to sap battery power and create issues. Just the standard late 80's power windows/door locks/sunroof, manual HVAC stuff. Same goes for my '91 900TC...much simpler, never any major glitches.
When do we reach the point where electronics become a detriment? And these electronically-run cars...they will NEVER be the future restoration projects that we all love to do (my Peugeot was...)....'cause they will be too expensive and too complicated to restore!
Just interested in your thoughts! Am I being a curmugeon?
Cheers,
Paul H.
