transoceanic flights and many cross-country carrying a CD player and various CDs (and losing a CD case on a plane), being able to have everything I could want to listen to, plus podcasts, a lot more appealing. The iPod is just more versatile than the other products and fits in one pocket. Plus it works fine in the car on my regular 250 to 850 mile business road trips.

Plus, I do a lot of interviews and video shoots where I have to work with audio clips. I can record audio on the iPod, organize it into audio clips in iTunes, cut and edit them in iMovie and put together clips for clients to hear off the iPod using external speakers when it's not practical to use the laptop.

It all depends on what you need to do. They cost a bit too much for what they are, but so do most things.
