and only use connectors that are putty/silicone filled, usually identified for underground use. The RW disignation corresponds to Rubber (better flexibility than THN wire) and Wet locations. I am not discounting Chaz's recommendations, but it sounds like you are on fresh water and the added labor of replacing the wiring every 5 years may be less than the added cost of marine grade wire.
Don't do what my Dad always did, splice together old lamp cords with electrical tape. What a PITA every season to find the open circuit/short and repair it.
