Megapixels is apparently an easy metric for camera companies to outdo each other with, and to imply lesser megapixels makes something obsolete quicker.
I have a 4-year old 6 megapixel Nikon DSLR. I'm one of the few that uses the megapixels, as I have a Epson 7600 roll-printer that costs more than the camera. The lenses needed to get max quality out of 6 megapixels often cost more than my camera is worth.
For 4x6 prints on my little Canon selphy printer, I resize the images to 1.5 megapixels before printing, and I have excellent prints.
I'd suggest just getting a spare Li-ion battery. Buy that at the same time you get a memory card for the new camera, as the freebie one is usually pretty meager. You can also get a $20 inverter for your Saab that will run your charger if you want to charge while traveling.
