Ultimately what determines the practical upper-bound on the number of MP you need is the size of the print and the resolving power of your eye at a given distance. Under the best of circumstances the human eye can resolve 0.01 cm at a distance of 30 cm (approx 1 ft) or 0.1 cm at 3 m (approx 10 ft). Imagine you are looking at an 8 x 10’’ (20 x 25 cm) print at 30 cm from your face. Along the longer dimension the print you would need 25/0.01 =2500 pixels, and along the other dimension 20/0.01 = 2000 pixels. To get the total for the whole image, multiply the two number 2500 x 2000 = 5,000,000 = 5 MP. Therefore going much beyond 5 MP is a waste of money, unless you want to make huge professional enlargements. In practice you and your family will look at the pictures at a much greater distance than 1 ft. If you look from 2 ft away you only need a quarter as many pixels (1.25 MP) to reach the limit of you eye .
As jp says, it’s the quality of the camera lenses rather than the MP that is more important with most cameras now, and having a decent printer (which can be had for about $100).

Now big screen TVs is a similar story.. but don't get me started on that
