My wife's '96 Audi A4 has the same issue, costs about the same to repair. The '94 - '96 small Audis all have a generic evaporator issue. We have been refilling the R134 every June, by the end of August it's gone. I tried the $12 two-part kit from Interdynamics one June, got the system recharged, the AC worked all summer, did not see any difference to the usual cycle, needed refilling again at the end of the summer. We are debating the wisdom of dumping $1500 - 2000 into repairing the AC on a ten-year old car (which is in very good shape otherwise) vs. continuing the annual repair cycle. Note that I do hear complaints about it on hot days in late August and September.
Given the chance that this might work vs. the cost of an evaporator replacement, I decided to give it a try. Your results may be different and there are different chemicals available for wildly different prices. Note that you will need to have the system serviced in any case, so you may want to take it to a real AC shop and see what they have to recommend. One mechanic advised me not to put any more leak repair chemicals in the system for fear of gumming up the expansion valve.
