A friend of mine at another shop asked me if I had ever calculated the total service, repair and maintenance cost of a car. I hadn't.
Maybe some of you out there have a good tally of the service costs of your car?
The reason for his question was that a long time customer of his was a little bit disappointed in the car due to the "high" maintenace cost and was selling it to get a Honda instead, hoping it would be less costly.
The car in question is a 2000 Toyota Camry with 90497 miles.
My friend saw the car the first time at 5000 miles for the first oil change and has done all the services and repairs from that date except tires.
He brought out all the invoices over the 5 years and added everything up including oil changes, timing belt, major services, brakes a battery and some small stuff.
It came up to $3428.41 which calculates to about 4 cents a mile in cost.
The car have never broken down or had to be towed.
And with this, the customer felt it had been too high of a service and maintenace cost and was going to try a "greener pasture" for the next choice of car.
That's how different we are.
