Even for a Toyota. I can't imagine an Accord costing any less. Even at that price, I would guess he used cheapo oil and Cooper tires... I know the gross total spent on my '90 9000 CS since I bought it used in'01 at 29,000 miles to run it until now (112,000) has been in the region of $7,500. This includes an additional set of alloy wheels bought for winter, snow tires, upgrades like ECU, JT exhaust, Sportchassi and stereo, getting the car detailed a couple of times, so some 'optional' stuff. I also have about $1,000 worth of extra parts I've picked up to keep on hand/pulled off parts cars, and I had the roof resprayed ($400) because it got destroyed by tree sap, and I was too busy at the time to notice it and remove it properly before it burned in. I also spent about $300 on paintless dent removal to get rid of dents (caused by some other imbeciles). So, I would say of the $7,500, $3,500 has been 'optional', or money spent to keep the car in top running shape - I don't drive th tires or brakes to the last mile, and I figure spending some money on paint or detailing is a more cost effective way to keep a nice car than trading every 3 years 'because the old one looks like crap'. I also buy a lot of my parts used or places like Eeuroparts, so if I had everything done at a dealer, it would be more - the $4,000 in needed work would probably have been $7 or 8,000. That's still only 8 or 9 cents a mile, which I consider very good. Depreciation and taxes has probably eaten another $10,000 in that time, so figure 20 cents per mile, plus insurance (0.12 per mile) and fuel, say another 9 cents a mile (average since 2001 - obviously much more [per mile now). I am self employed, so I do write off some of the car's maintenance, since I use it for business.
If your friend's customer wants to run a car cheaper than spending $0.04 per mile on parts and maintenance, the best suggestion I have for him is to buy a 100,000 mile chevy, and never do any maintenance to it; just drive it until it breaks terminally. If he wants to run a car for less than that. the only thing I can think of is to steal one!
