the value of snipping is simple...you put down the max amount you are willing to spend, but that doesn't mean others will...
If the current bid is $400 and you are willing to spend $500, the $400 may be willing to spend $550. If you increase to $405 at the last second, the $400 will not have the opportunity to re-up his total, thus insuring you get the item. I you do it an hour before, seeing he's out bid, the other guy will put in a higher amount and the item will end up selling to him for $505 instead of you for $405.
