I snipe using eSnipe.
If there's something I'm really interested in, I go look at the other auctions that the various bidders have won. From looking at the way they bid, I can get an idea how to formulate my own bid. If the bidders are the type that just raise their bids by $2 at a time until they just barely get to be the high bidder, I may not bid as high as if there's a bidder who puts in his best shot right from the start.
Finally, though, I put in the number at which I'm indifferent to whether I get the item or not. If somebody's proxy bid was higher, more power to him. He wants the item more than I do. And if I win the item, I win it at a price I'm OK with.
However, I don't want to tell the whole eBay world the number at which I'm indifferent, so I put it in right at the end, seconds before the end of the auction. I've lost many auctions that way, but I have few regrets.
Another thing to consider is that eBay has a feature (at least they used to, I haven't used it lately) where you can do a search to see all the items somebody if bidding on. I don't want anybody to know whether I'm interested in a given item, and if I don't put my bid in until 6 seconds before the auction ends, they won't know.
Some folks like Mr. 88900TC may think I'm cheating. I think I'm following the rules exactly. I didn't design eBay's system, I just use it. But I want to be as smart a user as I can be, and get the items I need without over-paying. I use a different strategy at live auctions which have different rules.
Best regards,
Dave
