RMinNJ said that he/she thought resurfacing rotors is unusual.
Joking? Or being cynical?
Resurfacing the rotor is the cheaper way to do it. I've had it done on my car. Only when the rotor is too thin is replacement required. Nowadays, rotors sometimes can't be resurfaced because the minimum thickness specified by the car company isn't much different from the thickness when new. Not too many years ago, you could resurface the rotors at least once, sometimes twice, before needing to change them.
If you pay attention, you can often detect if the rotors need resurfacing because they are warped (and can feel it when you brake).
If the dealer or mechanic recommended resurfacing, either they are honest and pay attention to cost containment (instead of recommending replacement of the rotor) or recommended resurfacing when nothing was needed.
