I bought a clean 1990 spg and over the course of about six months, along with some help from my friends, secretly worked on it and customized it up at Paul Dolmetsch Motors in Vermont.

My gf's car was dying (an 85 turbo 4dr with about a million miles on it) so once the SPG was ready, I took her 'car shopping' we went to a couple of local dealerships to check out some subarus and saabs (and had a completely miserable experience which included absolutely beat cars that the salesguy kept raving about how immaculate they were and a hung over salemen passing out in the back during a test drive)

After that fun I drove her up to Paul's, where we were supposed to discuss getting her a car from auction with him. I actually got her into her car 'to check it out' (Paul said 'It's owned by some crazy guy in New York'). She looked at it and said she loved, but new she couldn't afford one like this. I told her we could probably fine something similair with out all the bells n whistles for less...or if she really liked this one I could just give it to her.

It took about 30 minutes for her to register that the car was hers. I played Dirty Vegas 'Days Go Buy' on the abosulutely insane stereo system in there. I already knew that for the kind of money that people spend on engagment rings, she would rather have a car. She actually said that to me sometime between when I bought it and when I actually gave it to her. For awhile I thought she was onto but in the end, she never knew until that day. For several weeks afterwards things were unfolding like the end Sixth Sense, when she realized that this 'conspiracy' was hidden from her for over a year when I first decided to do it.
