That was the Saab ad campaign in the early 80's. At that time Saab was thought of as the quintessential "nerd" car in the USA. It was the car that tweedy professors and software geeks drove.

The Saab ad campaign was aimed at showing that owning a Saab, a car that had good handling, great safety, good performance, and lots of cargo space, all at a very reasonable price was a smart choice. Saab wasn't the the best in any of these areas, but was a car that rated well in every category and made Saab no apologies for those compromises.

The current Saab is not the Saab of the eighties, the competition is keener and the market niche is smaller, and Saab has had to make compromises to try to reach a broader audience. However, Saab still embodies the essence of the Scandinavian thought "form follows function". Saab excels in many areas. Saab continues to believe that the driven should be in control and should be involved in the operation of the car. Saab still believes that "driving" is a verb.

Saab needs some 'halo' cars like BMW has the M-series and Audi the R-series. The Saab Aero X is a great start. Now that Saab is attracting a larger crowd, Saab needs to show that crowd what makes a Saab different than the competition. In many ways Saab needs to once again show the public why Saab is the intelligent choice. That for a reasonable price a Saab does everything well from the weekend trip to IKEA to picking-up the in-laws at the airport. Saab does the job safely and with go fuel economy. Saab offers excellent traction and handling, and rewards the driver with the pleasure being connected to the driving experience.
