The question for Click and Clack was from a woman who was an industrial engineer trying to settle a dispute between her husband and father in law about why Saab switched to the transverse layout. Her father in law claimed the new transverse layout was an inferior configuration and something about the power distribution not being as good. I imagine the reference was to the unequal half shaft layout in a transverse setup. Her father in law is an electrical engineer and her husband is a mechanical engineer.
Click and Clack who are also MIT engineering grads said that the Saab C900 longitudal layout had the engine in backwards and it was difficult to service, except for the clutch. They also said the power distribution was improved in a transverse layout because the power didn't have to turn any corners. I don't think they picked up the driveshaft arguement.
