Yeah, the engine is backwards, but that just makes some things easier to work on and other things more difficult. But a C900 engine is infinitely easier to get at than the NG900's or 9-3's, IMO. According to Saab, the clutch was placed up front for better cooling.
The thing they missed is that the longitudinal setup gave room for the double wishbone front suspension of the C900 . The switch to a transverse layout meant GM had to design a McPherson suspension for the NG900 and 9-3; and as a former Viggen owner, I can testify that it took GM until the SS to get the suspension working again with high torque front wheel drive. All else equal, the longitudinal/wishbone setup is better, so the woman's father had a good point.
