over the past 10 or so years they have slipped. Many (maybe even most) awards attributed to JD Power aren't even done by them, but by companies who have licensed the brand name. There is no real way to know how the research is conducted, how the numbers are crunched, or how accurate the data is. But the average consumer just sees "JD Power" and thinks it must be true.
I used to do automotive market research and actually talked with JD himself a few years back and he alluded to this, but didn't come right out and say it, but you could tell it bothered him.
I think the JD Power company still does the automotive research, but as a predictive measure a survey like the 30-days from new doesn't mean much and I question the statistics involved. I'm not convinced that cars that sell in low volumes like a Saab 9-3 are sampled adequately compared to cars that sell in high volumes, like Toyotas and Hyundais. If you sample 1000 Hyundais and 100 Saabs is the data really comparable? Sometimes, but not always.
And there are other variables that can influence this, like is a person who dropped $30K on a Saab more likely to be picky about things not right in the first 30 days than someone who spent $20K on a Hyundai? I don't know, but since you don't know the research methodology you can't tell.
As with Condemner Reports, you can't really tell what is going on.
