We bought a tri-ply stainless set right around our wedding and they're great. Made me realize what I'd been missing by using $10 Meijer pans for years. While I use the stainless for 90% of my cooking, the one non-stick pan we got has held up really well. Very few scratches and absolutely no flaking after 3 years of consistent use.
Personally I'm EXTREMELY leery of modern cast iron. I have yet to ever see any that has a surface that's nearly as good as my older pieces. New cast iron has rough cooking surfaces, nothing like the smooth uniform surface they use to put on them. Look around for some antique cast iron, but for day to day cooking Calphalon Stainless Steel is the way to go (for consumer grade stuff anyway). Cast iron will always have a place (preferably snuggled up to my bacon), but the stainless is lighter and much easier to take care of.
