Great idea- wish I saw your response earlier- but since the bee-guy showed up as promised we let him do his job and watched in fascination and horror.
He verified it was a small hive; 200,000 bees. He figured it had been there about a week it had 15+ pounds of hive, brood wax and honey already. A box containing the queen is outside right now, and the swarm of relatively enraged bees at the side of the house will supposedly settle down and join her soon. So, FWIW -- I recommend being sure your abode is well sealed - ours got in at a teeny gap (about pea-sized) where the cedar shingles lapped together and butted up against the brick chimney. About 6 square feet of shingles had to be removed and some sheathing cut out.
