Dunno. That would be interesting to see. It is the kind of thing the insurance companies have in their database. One measure, I guess, would be to compare liability insurance rates which can go by zip code, distance to work, where one works, etc.
I know in relatively bucolic Upstate NY, two things are true. One, we rural drivers, on average, die more often per mile driven in auto accidents because of speed on two lane roads than do our urban NY neighbors. Lulled to oblivion while putting the pedal to the metal I guess; maybe more of the urban crashes are fender benders rather than high speed excusions off road or into the oncoming lane. Even so, I feel far safer here than when I get into urban traffic. The second truth, personal to me, is that when I see a NJ plate up here, I instinctively watch for the reckless act, the cut off move, the lane change with no advance signal, or just cruising way faster than I know the cops' tolerance to be in these parts. Driving in northern NJ taught me that a long time ago.
I would wonder if the Pine Barrens would be a more a more civilized place than the urban areas, or compared to those superhighways between Philly and NYC where I have feared for my life more than once.
