I was just on a shoot in Kitchener and my video crew came in with their van from Rochester. They had no issues except for lines coming back to U.S. None of them had a passport but U.S. Customs said entry can go smoother with passports. Although it is not yet formally required, using your passport can be helpful, as there is inconsistency in how customs reacts to a driver's license and a birth certificate.
Been to Canada 3X in past year (driving 2X) and there's been no issues.
