back in 2000 I was coming back into Vermont from a conference in Ottawa. Had a rental car that happened to have Florida plates. U.S. Customs saw the rental car, held onto my passport and told me I was to be inspected.
The customs dude went through *everything* in the trunk and did a general look-see of the rest of the car. Opened all my luggage--as in pulling all the stuff out of my suitcase-- even inspected my 20-year-old Nikon and asked if I had a receipt for it. Threatened to make me pay duty on stuff even though it was all under the allowable limit. Guy was a real jerk. This took about 45 minutes!
Maybe it was a slow date at the border by my guess is that FL plates on a rental car, driven by somebody with a passport going to New Hampshire set them off-- Figured I was transporting drugs or something. Was glad I had passed on buying any Cuban cigars on that trip.
In general, though, immigrations and customs people seem to have had their sense of humor removed. Most are barely civil. Seems to be true everywhere, although Canadians are slightly nicer. U.S., German, French, Brit and Japanese customs/immigration people are all the same. Must be a job requirement to have no personality.
