Jimi Thing isn't exactly subtle. Heck, when I was at William and Mary in the early 90's everyone from central Virginia had a "I smoked pot with Dave" story. Were they all true? Doubtful, but there's surely a kernel of truth there. You might be detecting a change in the fan community though. I suspect the loss of both the Grateful Dead and Phish have left a HUGE gap in "touring" culture. Just a guess though, I've not been to a concert in a (far too long) while.
I dearly love DMB's early albums and live shows, it really was an exciting time to see them... raw, energetic, and something completely different. What I've seen lately seems to polished and refined, more like Sting than the Dave Matthews Band I came to love back in the early 90's. The two shows they did at W&M in '93 and '94 were among the best I've ever seen. Might have been the time or the setting but those were great nights.
Funny aside: My first DMB show was when they came to William and Mary to open for Toad the Wet Sprocket in the Spring of '93. Even then most of the crowd came to see Dave and Co. not Toad... history has proved them right.
