My current road bike is a Basso Paris Roubaix 58 with Campagnolo Athena components. At the time I didn't weigh enough to ride a Cannondale (Cannondales used to be for "bigger" riders). Now that I weigh 40 lbs more a Cannondale might be more appropriate as sometimes I feel like my Basso struggles to deal with me.
I'd spend the money on better components and wheels. Mavic seems to be the best wheels from my experience. Depending on how much money you want to spend I'd go for the Ultegra instead of the 105. Again, it depends on how much you ride and what type of riding you do (and how much you want to spend).
In my heyday I was riding about 140 miles per week, mostly flat to slight climbs, no crazy climbing. Did a lot of metric centuries and never felt uncomfortable on my Basso. I stayed away from Carbon fiber since I had seen a lot of damage to frames from crashing or laying down bikes. Seeing a main or down tube split in half is a scary sight! I'm sure carbon fiber is a lot stronger now?
I'd ask if any shops up your way loan bikes (or rent) for the weekend. I'd do that with a few bikes and see what you feel more comfortable with.
Also keep your eye out for manufacturer's demo days.
Good luck!
