Pick a store that knows proper fit, you like the people, and generally you feel are knowledgeable. The advice for brands is useless if you buy a supposed "good" brand from a poor store with a poor fit. Look at what the employees ride do they ride what they sell? Look for a store that offers either Bikefitting.com, Serotta sizing, or the Fit kit. The proper fit will be everything the bike will be secondary. Don't listen to people who are riders and not in the business their knowledge usually extends to what they ride or what they've been told, a person in a good bike shop wants you to enjoy the bike, fit the bike, and ride the bike. I've been in the business for 30plus years and I'm still amazed people will buy a $6K bike without being fit. I professionally fit people for $600 bikes as well as mega buck full customs, just because someone doesn't have a bunch of money to drop on a bike doesn't mean the bike shouldn't fit.
My 2 cents, don't forget to have fun riding!

And of course more bikes than I can list, currently my favorite is my Merlin Extralight with Campy Record and Hyperon wheels 14.5 lbs of pure speed.
