My wife and I have cromoly steel frame road bikes with carbon fork and carbon seatposts. The ride is very comfortable, with the (minor) weight penalty of steel over aluminum or carbon.
Hers is a Bianchi Vigorelli with Shimano Ultegra, mine a Specialized Allez with Shimano 105. We each have owned a few MTBs with aluminum, steel, and titanium frames, and based on this, we went with cromoly steel frames when we took the plunge into road biking.
We also chose to go with manufacturers other than Trek and Giant. Sure they build good bikes, but I've seen about 200 Treks to her 1 Bianchi.
Also, look into Soma Fabrications. Well-built but inexpensive cromoly steel frames from the west coast.
Regards and good riding - JMJ
