I'm still riding my 1990 Canondale Criterium with a 105 group, so what I know about current road bikes is limited. Still, I can offer a little. First, this antique 105 group has been bullet proof; I mean, nothing ever problematic with it in any way. Amazing piece of engineering. I wouldn't hesitate to go 105 any time.
Second, I'd take less weight over a bit more forgiving ride any day. When I'm sailing the highway, as I was about two hours ago, the less I have to push around the better I like it. So give me the skinniest tires you can find and the lightest frame. I've never found my frame harsh to ride. Steel is real, especially when you're lugging it around.
Third, I would never buy a bike I hadn't seen and sat on. Mail order places like Performance are great for accessories, but I wouldn't even think about ordering a bike from them.
Fourth, I don't think Treks are the bikes they used to be. Trek bought some other brands (Klein, Fisher I think) which they kept as their high-end lines and "compromised" the Trek line in the process. When I shopped mountain bikes a couple of years ago, the Treks were nice enough, but they lacked the build and paint quality of a Klein or other top brand. Would it matter in the long haul? I haven't a clue. I just like things that look like they were built with care.
Finally, if what you want is too pricey, sit patiently on Ebay for a while and see what comes around. When I decided to try mountain biking, I fell in love with a Klein Attitude Comp, which was way more money than I wanted to spend on a hobby I'd never tried. After about a month of watching, I found a barely used, pristine one come up for auction about 200 miles from here. After inquiring about picking it up and bringing cash (so I could back out if it was a trasher), I bid it out for about 40% of new. Great ride.
