i'm working at a bike store in Fishkill, NY right now.
Trek sells nice bikes starting at $679 for a terrific value road bike. Shimano 105 shifts fine if it's adjusted properly.
if you move up a couple levels you can get a softtail, with an elastomer in the seat stays. it gives an inch of rear suspension, and it helps a whole lot.
Ultegra really feels nicer than 105 when shifting. unforts, the bikes it comes on are a bit more spendy.
any decent bike shop should put you on a bike on a trainer inside and fit you. they may have to swap a stem or move the seat back or forward, but fit is of the utmost importance on a road bike. someone came in today and we spent about an hour fitting him.
the problem with internet stores is you don't get someone experienced to set the bike up for you and help you get comfortable with it.
did you try any hybrids? they are not so hardcore as a full road bike with the drop bars, with a flat or mild riser bar they are a bit more comfortable.
my next bike will probably cost more than any car i've ever had.
