A lot depends on what she likes/dislikes in a car. Assuming she buys used there are a lot of Euro choices. Bear in mind that any Euro make can be expensive to fix, so hunt and choose carefully. With any, find a good indy.

Used Audi A4s or even A6s are nice, but quattro adds some complexity and increases fuel consumption. They share components with VW (the parent company) and there are some reliability issues w/ both brands.

BMWs (probably 3-series) are great, but may not be so good if you get a lot of snow. Solid cars, handle great. Not cheap to fix.

VWs are OK but seem to be troublesome these days (see Audi note above). Jetta and Golf have a cheap feeling to me these days.

Non-Euro she might want to check out Subaru, but I never see used Subies for sale that seem to be well-cared for. Just a FWIW.

I'd look at Mazdas. They have some nice stuff these days and are probably pretty good despite having fairly plastic interiors. The Mazda 6 can be had in a 4 door hatch that is not unlike a Saab 9000--just smaller. The 3 model is nice, too. Bit of closet if either of you is tall, IMO.

And don't discount Nissan. I was pleasantly surprised by a Nissan Altima. Had a Euro feel (but a little soft) but was very nice. Be sure to get one with ABS as it is NOT standard and the car gets *very* loose under hard braking at highway speeds. 1st hand experience, here!

That's my $0.02.
