As others have said, get yourself into an MSF Beginner class before you start riding on the street. You'll safely learn the basics without having to watch for cars, trucks, pedestrians, dogs, etc. Riding will be more enjoyable once you understand the basics. It helps to take an advanced course periodically after you've been riding a few years just to brush up on your skills and unlearn any bad habits you may have picked up. Next is the bike. Try to find a good "standard" bike to build experience. I've ridden a Suzuki SV-650S for years, mostly because it is a nice, light, fun- to-ride, easy-on-fuel commuter (around 50 MPG) that will still carve the curves nicely and has a naught to sixty time of around 3.5 seconds. Some will call the SVs a good beginners bike, but I still enjoy the challenge and I've been riding for 30 years. My son races his SV which makes up a significant part of a couple racing classes. Other bikes to consider are the Honda 599 (Hornet in Europe), the Yamaha FZ6, and the Kawasaki Ninja 650R. Finding a good used bike might be a good idea, because you will drop it at some point in time, most likely in a parking lot or sitting at a traffic light. It happens! I recommend a "standard" for beginners because cruisers tend to be heavy, making them harder to maneuver, and sport bikes (Honda CBRs, Suzuki GSX-Rs, etc) are usually a lot of fun, but are often faster than beginner skills can handle. Insurance on sport bikes is also expensive. I know young men in my area (Hampton Roads, VA) who pay upwards of $6000 per year for insurance on their dream bikes. I pay a little under $350, primarily because of my age, lack of tickets and accidents, and I ride a bike with a low loss rate. However, where you live is a factor for insurance. My insurance cost went down by 50% on my Suzuki when I moved from Honolulu to here. Get the rider trained and ready, get a basic bike to gain experience and then go for what you want. I plan to get a Ducati ST3S next, but I'll continue to use my SV for commuting.
