For the C900s the Bentley books can't be beat, but for later models we have to make do with Haynes and online resources. There are also online resources for the C900s.
Figure out what you need to work on and look in whatever flavor of book you have. Then go to something online dedicated to your car. They give a different perspective, often with photos, and don't assume you have $10K in tools and a lift.
You may or may not need to add some tools. Depends on what ya have.
Chemicals are good too:
WD40
Spray solvents and cleaners for electrical, brake parts, carb/thottle body, silicone sprays.... all useful stuff, and inexpensive.
Get a digital multimeter--necessity on cars these days
Dielectric grease is essential if you have a DI cassette, useful for other connections.
Loctite comes in blue (you can undo the bolt) and red (it's hard to undo the bolt)
Anti-seize compound is also useful, and necessary on some jobs.
Depending on your preferences you might also like to try using gloves. Mechanics gloves do a good job of protecting your hands and are only about $10. You can't use them all the time, but they are nice to have. Some here also use doctor-type latex or nitrile gloves. Very nice for greasy work. Buy a box of 100 for about $7 at Home Depot.
Safety glasses weren't in vogue 20-30 years ago, but are common now. $10 or so gets a decent pair for under car work.
Just my $0.02
