I looked under my car last night to ensure no bent sheetmetal or other hidden damage - I remember how Dean's 9-5SW was totaled after rolling into a mailbox post, albeit a brick one - and found no damage under the car. The white stuff brushes off my bumper, there is a 1/8-inch wide by 3 to 4 inch long scrape in the bumper skin showing black, but it is immediately adjacent to the black rub strip and difficult to notice. There are some very shallow acratches in the plastic panel between the bumper and taillight lens which might disappear with polishing compound. There are some deeper scratches in the black plastic lip beneath the rear bumper but you have to be laying on the ground to see these.
My car is 6-1/2 years old with nearly 180,000 miles. It is my "baby" and I take great care of it but these minor cosmetic issues are not worth the cost of repair.
On the other hand, my limited experience with body shop costs has me estimating the cost of her repairs at around $4,000! Since she is college aged, and has one of the "800 Number" insurance companies, I am guessing she carries no collision coverage.
It is hard to believe I could do that much damage to her car with only scratched paint on my plastic bumper. I didn't see any rust on her crumpled metal indicating old damage, but I still wonder. My oldest son was victim to many hit-and-run parking lot skirmishes while in college. It is possible most of her damage was pre-existing. I imagine I will be sued over this one.
