The Catalina is nice manageable boat, and as others have said not as heavy duty as some other boats, but should be fine for what you want to do. I'll add to almost every poster here to find a good surveyor. You want to know what you are buying, and how much work needs to be done on the boat.
I would lean towards the diesel vs atomic 4. The A4 is a great engine, but it is 30yrs old, and likely due for a rebuild. Also gasoline on a sailboat is touchy, and a lot more dangerous than diesel. Also the '76 is 11yrs older, so more likely to have balsa core issues. This is where you really need the surveyor.
Is the hull of the 27 Catalina balsa core? If so, you may want to stay away from this boat because eventually you will have issues with core.
This is a great time of year to be looking at boats. Buyer's market. Be patient, and you will find a goodie.
