Catalina 27 is one of the most (if not THE most) popular boats in the 27-28 foot range. There is a reason for that. In addition to age, there are other important differences that you may want to consider - a standard height mast or a tall rig for lighter air areas, tiller or wheel steering, engine arrangement, etc.

Have you checked out Yachtworld for other Catalina 27s and their asking prices?

My three recommendations would be:

1) to not worry about the gas vs. diesel engine question as in many ways the preferable solution for this boat is an outboard on a motor mount. It'll be easier to work on, and won't add any drag while sailing.

2) find a broker to help find and select the boat to get

3) be VERY choosy in selecting a surveyor, even if you pay only $5K for the boat, it will be the best $400 you will spend on the boat. Even if you decide to not get the boat after the survey, you'll only be down $400. Believe me, from experience, you can get big problems you didn't know existed if you have a bad surveyor. I bought a Sabre 28 in Ithaca two years ago and my surveyor missed extensive core delamination on the coach roof which will be about $8K to fix. Email me and I'll tell you who I do not recommend.
