Aaron,
I don't know about you, but a 3-4 hour drive to pick up a nice Saab would be considered "close" to me. I'm in NorCal, near Tahoe and bought a car from Maryland. I did not expect to do that. If I had ANY reservations in speaking with the owner, I'd just forget it. This owner set me at ease, and the service history of the car confirmed it.
There's already been some great advice given, including speaking with someone who worked on the car. If the owner isn't willing to give you the name of the shop he/she uses, then hang up the phone. Request pictures of everything. Ask about rust (things are different around the nation, as I'm sure you know). You'll know if things seem okay. If the car sounds too good to be true, it probably is. An owner who admits to small blemishes is at least bing honest with you.
Best of luck. I know I got lucky... I narrowly missed a SoCal car (an 8 hour drive, but I thought it was "close").
