My current '96 9000 came from New Jersey and I live in New Hampshire.
The seller was an indy repair shop and used dealer who is a TSN sponsor. He happened to have serviced the car for much of its life and I talked with him at length, also with his head tech. I was also able to email a few times with the PO who it turns out is a Saab guy who's had them for 20+ years and was very good about maintentance.
The car was well represented and I went away happy. I rented a car, drove down (4 hours) and did the deal. Dumped the rental and came home in my "new" Saab.
Buying from an individual is a lot riskier, but long conversations about what has been done and when, and picures tell you a lot. So do maintentance records and knowing what to look for. I'd ask for lots of pix: interior, engine bay including details like serp belt, hoses and upper mounts, tires, exterior from multiple angles, maybe even under car to check exhaust and CV boots.
You may also be able to find a TSN regular near where a candidate car is to go take a look or recommend an indy to do an inspection.
